Magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) uses MRI scanners to measure concentrations of neurotransmitters, antioxidants, nutrients, and other small-molecule metabolites in living tissue without surgical intervention or even ionizing radiation.
As such, MRS enables unprecedented discovery in biomedical research and clinical diagnostics, having been applied to a multitude of conditions in health and disease and continually being optimized for many more.
Team-taught by experts from SEAS and CUMC in magnetic resonance and psychiatry, BMEN4490 covers all aspects of in vivo MRS from theory to experiment, including but not limited to study design and data acquisition in human patients through results quantification and ultimate clinical interpretation. Special attention will be paid to brain applications in neurological and psychiatric disorders, and emphasis will be placed on hands-on implementation of techniques discussed in lecture, including analyzing and interpreting real data and, circumstances permitting, experiments run in real time at the MR scanner.
With two professors and two teaching assistants, BMEN4490 features an unprecedented instructor : student ratio enabled by the Columbia Collaboratory Fellows Fund.
